Description / table of contents
It is an undisputed fact that we will have to continue to improve the technology used in our electricity infrastructures if we are to achieve our climate and energy policy goals. There will however be several challenges to overcome on the way. Cooperation may be becoming more widespread at a European and global level but the competition in technology is getting stiffer.
Integrating renewable and distributed generation will become even more important, with efficiency playing a major role across all areas of energy transmission, distribution and use. We will therefore have to improve flexibility and gear services to demand, aspects that not only require technological solutions but also the active involvement of all grid participants right down to the consumers and the further development of the legal and regulatory framework. Power grids must become enablers of new technologies such as electric mobility.
The key success factor in developing new, sustainable solutions that can actually be implemented in this complex field is to involve all the relevant players in research and development, which will therefore mean including new ones from time to time. This also applies in particular to the changing or new roles to be played in the energy systems of the future and to developing the transition processes.
Towns and areas that test smart grid solutions within the context of holistic system concepts (smart cities, smart regions) and develop demonstration projects make an important contribution here.
The 2011 Smart Grids Week also aims to promote and strengthen the process that has got off to a successful start in Austria and help to link up with international developments.
This year the focus is on
- National and international strategies
- Smart Grids - essential element of future energy supply structures
- Smart metering from the smart grids perspective
- Smart grids as chance for sustaining infrastructure
National and international players in the field of electricity industry, research, industry and administration, dealing with the development of electricity infrastructure, its potential challenges and opportunities.
Project manager of research projects supported by the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology within the programs "Energy Systems of the Future", "New Energies 2020" of the Climate and Energy Fund and of research projects which may fit into the theme of "smart grids" are invited to present their project results, information or publications in the format of scientific posters.
At the poster exhibition of Smart Grids Week Linz the Climate and Energy Fund is inviting those projects in particular which were funded by the 4th call "New Energies 2020". These give an overview of the newly added research projects which are currently about to start.
