Smart Grids - Intelligent Energy Systems of Tomorrow

[ GERMAN ]

Developing Smart Grid solutions is a decisive step towards sustainable energy systems of tomorrow. M. Hübner (bmvit - Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology)

Intelligent integrated solutions are regarded as a key to developing energy supplies towards sustainability against the background of national and international efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, of integrating renewable energy sources further, of improving the efficiency of the energy system and of the desire for increased energy independence.

The development and implementation of Smart Grids should make it possible to meet current and future challenges such as fluctuating electricity feed-in from renewable energy sources, increasingly decentralised electricity generation and storage, and growing demand for energy services based on electricity.

In line with current international debates, the development of smart grids also includes issues of transregional interaction and of the repercussions of new developments within the distribution grid on the transport level.

The Smart Grid solutions to be developed should serve the following goals:

  • Further development of the electricity infrastructure as a basis for achieving political goals in the direction of sustainability.
  • Optimal integration of renewable energy sources and of decentralised generation.
  • Increased efficency within the energy system and optimization of infrastructure.
  • Making demand more flexible.
  • Furthering new technologies, e.g. smart services, electro-mobility.
  • Support for developing energy regions of tomorrow which aim at a high degree of self-sufficiency.
